Solos for the Student Horn Player
by Black Composers

Commissioning Project - Solos for the Student Horn Player

I've been focused on expanding the repertoire for horn players for over 20 years and have been thinking about ways to grow the resource pool of works for younger horn players for almost as long. This unique commissioning project seeks to create a solo horn collection, like some of the concert and contest collections that have come before, but will focus exclusively on the work of black composers. Twelve (12!) living composers from all over the world will be writing solos for horn and piano, focusing on the pedagogical needs of the advancing student horn player. Added to this collection will be four transcriptions of vocal works from black composers who are no longer with us, but whose music will be reimagined for horn so that their voices and expression can be experienced by a new generation of horn players.

Each new piece will represent either levels 3, 4, or 5 from the Maryland Music Educators Association (RCM Grades 6,7, 8, 9; ABRSM Grades 6, 7, 8) and the anthology as a whole will have a range of genres, characters, tonalities and tempos.

Composers will be working with me and a small group of professional colleagues and educators to create meaningful, exciting works that provide an immersive music experience for students and their teachers.

Where we're at

Our total budget for this project is $14000. To date, $5000 has been raised (yay!). Final drafts of the music will start coming in September, at which time most of the budget will be spent to pay composer fees. Any extra money will help in bringing the composers to Washington, DC in February 2023 for the world premiere recital and help pay for studio and recording fees.

Cimarron Music Press, a renowned publisher and seller of music for brass and winds, will publish the collection. Many thanks to Bryan Doughty, who has been an invaluable source of encouragement and knowledge.
